9 March 2023

The March 2023 Meating was held, uncharacteristically, on the second Thursday of the month at Spring Hill staple, The Alliance Hotel.

Established in 1864, this well-loved watering hole was the first in Australia to produce absinthe. Since then, the pub has gone through many lives and now boasts numerous function spaces and some great food and wine options.

The eight attending members met for some pre-meating chit chat in the Alliance’s historic public bar before venturing into the dining hall, where Founding Member McIntyre had generously deposited the ever-elusive Beef Box.

Members were treated to a 300g black angus sirloin with a red wine jus and a selection of sides and mustards. A 2021 Malbec from Argentina was the night’s accompaniment.

The traditional quiz resulted in a tiebreak decider. Luckily, the group was in luck for an interested diner nearby was only too happy to provide the members with a question or two: “What wine variety am I drinking?” which was answered correctly by Member Mawdsley, who took home the points.

Of note: Founding Member Allen made the ingenious suggestion that members’ name badges could be stored safely within the Beef Box, along with the knives. The fact that this suggestion had not eventuated in the preceding 12.5 years of the Club’s history is a testament to the volume of wine usually drunk at such meatings.
