This year’s Beefmas in July event was held at the New Farm staple, the Continental Café
(http://www.continentalcafe.com.au/index.htm). The Continental Café has been serving up European-style
classics in a homey, elegant environment for twelve years and treated the Beef and Burgundy Club to our very
own private dining room for the night. A fantastic response to the invitation saw 30 members and guests brave
the cold mid-winter’s night to enjoy the Christmas festivities.
After sampling the appetiser of rosemary flatbread with blue cheese, our members and honoured guests dined
on a 300g Angus Rib Fillet with an accompaniment of piazzola sauce and fries. The delightful dinner was
generously washed down with a 2014 shiraz from Dog Ridge winery in Maclaren Vale, SA.
The service provided by the staff of the Continental Café was exceptional. Gracious in the face of 30 rowdy but
jovial guests, the staff ensured that bellies were full and wine glasses were never empty. Many of the members
also ordered (and devoured!) the sweet treats on offer after dinner had ended – a telling tribute of the quality of
the food at the Café. The Beef and Burgundy Club would like to sincerely thank Beau Downs and the Continental
Café for their hospitality and attention to detail.
The meating saw the introduction of a new tradition to the Aurora Chapter – The Beefmas Belt. A competition in
3 parts (a Christmas themed questionnaire, a lolly-jar guessing game and a colouring competition) came down to
two worthy competitors – Ms Emily O’Hagan and Mr Andrew Thompson. A title fight **arm wrestle** ensued and,
after a battle, Ms O’Hagan triumphed to be the inaugural winner of the Beefmas Belt. Most hearty
congratulations to this illustrious and humble winner.
The Beefmas in July meating also bore witness to an unusual event – two potential members who both wanted
to join the Club but alas, their existing relationship prevented one or the other from joining our fold. After both
Graeme and Natalie gave speeches, it was left to the existing members to vote on which individual was to join
us. Two other new members gave rousing speeches, much to the joy and heckling of the members. The Beef
and Burgundy Club would like to welcome new members Candice, David and Natalie.
Your hosts for next month will be Carl Blunk and Emily O’Hagan, who will no doubt be sporting the Beefmas Belt
for its second outing. Thank you to all those who attended the 2016 Beefmas in July!
