For its inaugural ‘official’ meating, it was only fitting that the Canberra Chapter went to the one of the first pubs in Canberra – the Old Canberra Inn.
It was the perfect location for a cold July evening in Canberra – with plenty of fireplaces creating a cozy atmosphere. Having recently come under new ownership, the venue has undergone somewhat of a rejuvenation of late, and has gained a reputation as one of the best places in town to go for a good pub meal and craft beer.
Sam and the team did a fantastic job behind the scenes to make sure that we had a great evening, and set us up in a private room out to the side of the pub. The meal was a melt-in-your-mouth grain fed scotch fillet with hand cut chips and beans. Despite having 18 hungry red meat aficionados to cook for at once on one small grill, the consensus was the all the steaks had been cooked to perfection. The wine was a bit of a surprise for the evening – a local Murrumbateman Cab Sauv. This proved a hard one to pick, given that this is not a variety the region is known for, but the medium bodied red was the perfect compliment to the meal. As an introduction to the BBC for many first time members, the Old Canberra Inn has certainly set the bar high for future meatings.
Also – note to future Beef Masters: Don’t have so much fun on the night that you totally forget to take any pictures.
